Auto Insurers Are Watching Social Media Posts

You’ve probably read about people losing their jobs or blowing a job interview because of indiscrete Facebook posts. But employers and HR departments aren’t the only people scanning social media sites for personal data. Now the car insurance industry may be reading your posts, too.

According to an October 13 post on Insurance Journal, insurance investigators are already checking out social media sites for evidence of potential auto claim fraud. London’s uninsured vehicles seized

Following a major operation last week targeting Londons uninsured drivers, the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) says it has taken the highest number of calls to its dedicated police helpline since the line was set up in 2007.

The calls contributed to 558 vehicle seizures and 76 arrests across the capital in one day.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Bernard Hogan-Howe, and Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, launched the operation using a pile of crushed cars, to demonstrate the consequences of being uninsured.

Roadside check points with automatic number plate recognition were in place at a number of locations, while police officers also pursued uninsured drivers using fixed cameras and routine number plate checks. <
